GrubHub, the self-proclaimed leader in online and mobile food ordering business in the US, recently published a white paper which contained interesting data about the eating habits of American men and women. Accessible through a quick tap on your mobile screen, GrubHub offers a deep and rare insight into the American stomach. It is at service 24*7 in around over 700 cities and is dedicated to connect hungry diners with over 30,000 local takeout restaurants.
From the data made available by GrubHub emerged the radical gendered differences and the culture of food choice. In the findings it was noted that men are loafers and eat a lot of junk foods, while women are ambitious calorie crunchers. “While men gravitate toward fad foods such as poutine and dishes featuring Sriracha hot sauce, women are drawn to gluten-free options, pressed juice and dishes featuring kale, chia seeds and quinoa,” GrubHub's white paper said.
It was found that men, while at work during the day, take a break and head out for lunch, whereas women are 30% more likely to order from the work place and eat at the desk. It is more likely for men to order food at home - very late in the evenings and on weekends especially - and eat it there. They place orders 55% more often than women between 10pm and 2am. An interesting fact which came to the light was that very few people make healthy choices between such desperate hours.
According to researchers, men are more likely to be night owls. One hypothesis says that “eveningness is associated with psychological and behavioral traits that are instrumental in short-term mating strategies, with the evidence being stronger for women than for men.”
The GrubHub’s data bank particularly emphasizes that pizza is one common food choice that transcends sex and unifies the genders. Both men and women order the undisputed American favorite - in addition to fries and soda - at nearly the same rates. Women are more likely to order pressed juices than sodas as well as frozen yogurt rather than milkshakes. Edamame is 61% more common with
women, avocado rolls 57% and plantains 44%.
The data reveals that when it is about ethnic foods, both men and women part ways in thrie choices. Women go for Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Korean, whereas men gravitate to swarthier options: Greek, Turkish, and Mediterranean. Even when the sexes do agree on an ethnic cuisine, though, they still take their own dietary paths toward satiation.
When talking about Mexican, men are 45% more likely to order a chorizo sausage taco, whereas women are 65% more likely to go for an 'ensalada.' If the meal is Thai, men are 36% more likely to order spicy fried rice; women are 43% more likely to order a seaweed salad.
Men overwhelming go for the 'meat samosa' when ordering Indian food, while women are happier eating 'vegetable korma.' When it comes to basic American food, men are more inclined to eat wings, cheeseburgers and cheesesteaks; women stick to soups and salads.
The findings also revealed that there are even variations within these choices according to time of day. For breakfast, men are more likely to order steak and eggs or a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich, while women go for veggie omelets and grits. At lunch, men prefer General Tso’s chicken; women go for miso soup. For dinner, men once again love their General Tso’s chicken, while women like the avocado rolls.
Experts suggest that there are a number of other ways in which these numbers could be arranged - based on by ethnicity, region, or age. However, the GrubHub's recent data confirms a long known fact that Women eat healthier than men.
