What is USMLE?
The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), also called board exam assesses whether student can apply for medical license in the US. The USMLE exam is conducted by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).
This entire USMLE exam is conducted in three steps –
- USMLE Step 1
- USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Skills (CS)
- USMLE Step 3
Both 1st & 2nd tests are usually taken when the student is in medical college and step 3 is after graduation. After completing 2 years of medical school and having knowledge in microbiology, pathology, genetics, biochemistry, nutrition and anatomy, students can take USMLE Step 1 exam and which has multiple choice questions.
What is USMLE STEP 2 Exam?
The USMLE Step 2 exam is further categorized into Clinical Skills (CS) and Clinical Knowledge (CK). The Step 2 examination is a two day test.
USMLE Clinical Knowledge (CK) test has clinical topics studied during last year of medical school. The USMLE Step 2 CK exam is conducted as multiple choice questions and it can be availed by students who are enrolled or passed degree from medical college authorized by the world directory of medical schools.
USMLE Clinical Skills (CS) test to see how you perform at physical exam, patient interaction, communication skills and students need to travel to one of the five testing centers in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia or Houston.

USMLE Step 2 CK Exam Pattern
USMLE Step 2 CK is a multiple choice computerized exam that should be taken after examinees have completed core clinical knowledge like Surgery, Medicine but before the graduation from their medical school. The Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) exam is a nine hour timed exam having 355* multiple choice questions with minimum of 45 minutes of break time and not more than 45 questions in each of eight blocks. The minimum passing score in USMLE Step 2 CK exam is 209*.

Eligibility Criteria for USMLE Step 2 CK Exam
To be eligible for USMLE Step 2 CK exam, a medical student must be officially enrolled in a medical school that is listed in World Directory of Medical School. A candidate should be enrolled in or graduate of medical school outside of United States and Canada and eligible for the USMLE exam by the ECFMG.
USMLE Step 2 CK Exam Dates
There is no specific date for the USMLE step 2 exam and within a three month eligibility period, medical students have the option of selecting a date. The test date for step 2 CK exam cannot be in the first 14 days of January or on major holidays.

Step 2 CK test includes following content topics:
- Preventive Medicine
- Internal Medicine
- Dermatology/Neurology/Emergency Medicine/Ophthamology
Most USMLE Step 2 CK test describe clinical situations and require that you provide one or more of the following:
- A Prognosis
- Indication of underlying mechanisms of disease
- The next step in medical care, including preventive measures
The USMLE Step 2 CK test is classify into two verticals: physician task and disease category. Step 2 exam is integrated and broadly based exam which requires interpretation of laboratory and table data, photographs of grass, imaging studies and microscopic pathologic specimens.
